RBF believes that a society that has a strong culture of reading (and writing) can free itself of the social ills. Literature and books, play an important role in literacy, eradication of ignorance and of shaping a peaceful and cohesive society.
The inaugural Rutanang Book Festival took place on 25-27 April 2016, in Tlokwe. The event was attended by different literature stakeholder from the different provinces of South Africa and the SADEC countries. In 2017 The Rutanang Book Festival was awarded Best New Literary Festival of the Year 2016 by one of the leading literature blogs in Africa.
